When Music Hurts and Heals: Why We Support SIMS Foundation

“They Say Art Imitates Life… But Sometimes Art Saves It”
For artist Cory Cory, music wasn’t just a craft. It was a compass.
But during one of the darkest seasons of her life—when depression, drinking, and distance crept in, she lost that compass.
She thought she was holding it together.
Until she wasn’t.
“I was anxious all the time. Drinking too much. Not eating. I was distant from my husband and son… and I thought I was keeping it together.”
It wasn’t just emotional. It became physical.
💔 A Breakdown, A Fall, and a Shattered Wrist
Just weeks after starting therapy, Cory traveled with her husband to Budapest. On that trip, she tripped and shattered her wrist in nine places.
Emergency surgery back in Austin.
A pain disorder.
Another surgery.
Hospital bills piling up.
The guitar she used to cling to? Unplayable.
“I couldn’t sing. I couldn’t play. I couldn’t even use my hand. I felt totally helpless… like a burden.”
But she kept showing up to therapy for her wrist, and for her mind.
That’s when SIMS stepped in.
SIMS Foundation: When Musicians Need a Lifeline
SIMS Foundation, based in Austin, Texas, provides mental health and substance use recovery support to musicians and their families.
“I was in crisis mode. I submitted an online application to SIMS… and thankfully I was quickly matched with a therapist. I honestly don’t know where my life would be now if I hadn’t had access to the help I needed.”
SIMS Foundation isn’t just about therapy—it’s about survival for the people behind the music we love.

Healing Through Production, One Song at a Time
Unable to play guitar, Cory turned to music production.
A MIDI keyboard. A computer. A different kind of outlet.
And in that quiet space, the song “Throw” was born.
It wasn’t polished. It wasn’t perfect.
But it was real and it was hers.
“Once I started producing my own music and could reflect at a safe distance, this song came out.”

Turning Pain Into Purpose — The Collection
When Sky Titan partnered with Cory Cory to release merch inspired by the song Throw, she made a bold choice:
50% of all profits from her designs went directly to SIMS when the collection dropped.
Because this wasn’t about sales.
It was about giving back to the organization that helped her keep going when she couldn’t see a way forward.

Music, Mental Health & the Research Behind It
This isn’t just anecdotal.
Studies show:
-
Musicians are up to 3x more likely to suffer from mental illness than the general population.
-
According to Frontiers in Psychology, music can regulate mood, reduce cortisol levels, and enhance neuroplasticity.
-
But untreated trauma, touring burnout, and financial instability make support systems like SIMS essential.
